New research reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such drugs should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and you become ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
