The Life Cycle of a Movement tends to be marked by distinct phases.

1. The Grand Vision

An inspiring figure or figureheads introduce an innovative concept that promises a panacea for disconnected individuals.

And so it goes. Plans are in motion to challenge the establishment down in Brisbane. Tensions are rising. Signs of trouble appear from within. An isolated player, exposed, anxious, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT written on his body as a symbol, has stumbled from the field and is taken aside in secrecy towards an inconclusive loan stint at Derbyshire.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Movement founders offer a new start, optimism ahead, support, salvation within a community who all believe in the method.

Yet it’s clear the concept. It’s the player attempting a move so depraved it has to be pixelated. It’s the adrenaline of the captain at his peak, an expression conveying: pensive Nordic god, beard made of wood, untamed style, truly contemporary you half-expect to look down and find him positioned in the field bare-chested holding a fish.

It’s the opener often seen speaking publicly, resembling a cheerful animal formally attired, uttering phrases such as we are actively deconstructing the orange. Indeed, the atmosphere, for quite a long time, was uplifting.

3. A New Life

Building period. Unity enforced through repetition of the cult’s slogans. These ideas are often illogical as a test of “true belief”.

Is it just me? The backlash, the fury, the sense of betrayal after the first Ashes Test defeat feels overblown, overdone. England batted badly during the match, as is typical there. On the other hand, we have the wider backdrop of the host’s complex ingrained annoyance towards the unconventional visitors, claiming, the methods you value and have honed as part of your identity from others, it’s just a joke ultimately.

Here lies the truth. Everything is a cult. The style was a trend since the sport itself is insular. In fact, the sport in England is closed, a group, a garden party, an insular community with two hundred years of ceremonial past defining it. This has always been a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the colonial game of England, the original sports washers. And guess what, the country is a phenomenon, a structure of hidden ranks, a royal family remains.

England’s cricketers have been enclosed within this world from a young age. Seeking change, to foster positivity, they are just repeating their upbringing, creating another a bubble, an exclusive group, but doing it this time with a new team and a coach promoting authenticity provided you conform.

Live where your feet are. Embrace challenges. However much you change, you remain stuck.
