The Trump movement's most illuminating and characteristic instances β not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening β occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president commenced revealing the public his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to construct it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad β the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to USAID amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently a study forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have risked β truly, no other president would have imagined β independently wrecking large sections of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.

As disorienting as it is to observe the leader seek toι’ θ¦ the traditional concept of democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it completely novel. That is those of us β among senior generations close to half β who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a figure of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Jesus that I grew up with, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.

Jesus' answer to hostility is to offer the additional cheek β not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and straightforward fact that Christ from scripture calls for a type of profound affection centered on the poor has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was contained through watering down β Protestantism was so prevalent that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
Hence I have become inspired to observe the persistent defiance against Trump arise during the previous year. It has served as substantial consolation to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the best parts within national heritage.

America is best defended, in other words, by relationship to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to what makes it distinctive and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus. In all circumstances does it suggest pretending the most negative regarding America and religious tradition did not happen; it represents both modesty and faith, a combination that committed US believers ought to accept.
