Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The narrative starts when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
