In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
